Mount Moffatt National Park....a well remembered trip
One of our better remembered trip occurred quite a few years ago...2005 actually.
Pam and I and some friends, Ray and Robyn, went off on a trip west....about 700 km west actually. We had read of an excellent camping location in a section of the Carnarvon National Park, the Mt Moffatt NP, a largely undeveloped smaller park to the west of the main park.
We had heard that we would see the land as it has been, before the tourists arrive...this proved to be very true, we found lots of evidence of Aboriginal existence...paints, rock art, carvings, in fact I found a flat rock which clearly had been used as a sharpening tool...I left it as I found it, as we were leaving the park we chatted to the ranger, I mentioned my find and he told me I should have taken it!..."Someone else probably will" !
We were quite stunned by the beauty of Mount Moffatt. One particular part stuck in our memories was an evening spent watching the sun go down over Marlong Plains, a large flat section set, like a large basin surrounded by low hills, as the sun went we viewed wildlife slowly gather to drink at a small natural billabong, kangaroos, dingoes, a wombat, multitude of birds, all together, no fighting, just like us, relishing the atmosphere. A small herd of brumbies too. A time to remember. We do intend to return to Mt Moffatt, while we still can.
When we returned home I sent a story into the publishers of Jeep Action Australia, a popular four wheel drive magazine aimed at the many Jeep owners in Australia.
