Welcome to Lockyer Legends
Hello and welcome to Lockyer Legends, we are Paul and Pam and we live in the Lockyer Valley in Southern Queensland. Australia.
We have been caravanning around Australia since the early 1970's...we have been to every state. Now retired and 'getting on a bit' our trips are more likely to be shorter, perhaps a month or so.
Our preference is for low cost camping, we are set up for 'off grid' camping, as the saying goes.
By low cost we mean free camping, show grounds and recreation grounds and similar, occasionally we will need to stay in caravan parks of course, in this case we will try to avoid the coastal parks with their many features, most aimed at families with children, these parks are usually much more expensive.
One of our recent interests is to watch various caravan, camping and four wheel drive videos on YouTube.
We particularly like watching the antics other RVer's, mostly other Australian's but also the many RVer's in the US.
We are quite intrigued by the similarities between the US and Australia...perhaps the biggest difference might be the size of the campers in the US. Typically in Australia we will have a caravan (called a travel trailer in the US) it will be somewhere around 15 to 25 feet in length. This is quite different to the common use of Fifth wheelers (as we call them here)
We have three main types of campers in use....the term 'camper' usually refers to a trailer with a folding canvas and fibre-glass set-up mounted on it, next we have a caravan which is the same as the US travel trailer, these also come with a collapsible roof and are termed pop-top caravans. as mentioned we do have fifth-wheelers here too, mostly of US manufacture but they are no common.
In addition we have many motor-homes on our highways, many converted buses too, the US type Big Bus motor-homes are not common.
Our most common form of tow vehicle will be a four wheel drive vehicle, a pick-up (called a Ute, short for utility vehicle) or an SUV, diesel is the most common fuel for tow vehicles. American trucks, Ram's, Chev Silverado's and Ford F series are gaining in popularity.
Our caravan parks appear to be similar to American RV parks...in most cases will will have a water connection, 240 vac 15 amp electricity, a sullage (grey water) drain point, in some cases a TV cable connection too.
Our black water is commonly contained in a removable cassette and emptied into a 'dump point' many of which are located around the country and commonly free to use.
I guess the main reason our 'campers; are mostly smaller and more compact would be due to our fuel costs, a litre of diesel will cost around $1.60 to $2.50, depending on how far 'out of town' your are;
We would love to communicate with other RV'ers, from anywhere in the world, we will answer all emails.. find us here:
